Paul McCartney - The Boys of Dungeon Lane (2026)

Image
I can hear the craftsmanship immediately, but I struggle to find much tension underneath it. The melodies are pleasant, the arrangements are polished without being sterile, and the album moves comfortably from song to song. The problem is that comfort becomes the dominant feeling. The childhood memories and Liverpool references create atmosphere, but they rarely evolve into something emotionally larger. I understand the affection behind the songs, yet I don't feel much urgency. The album often sounds like a man revisiting old photographs rather than confronting what those memories mean now. What keeps the record afloat is McCartney's natural musicality. Even relatively minor songs contain melodic ideas that many writers would be happy to claim. The voice carries decades of history, and that history adds weight to material that might otherwise feel lightweight. Still, I find myself admiring the album more than engaging with it. The songs are well-made, but few demand repeated...

Basia Bulat - Basia's Palace (2025)

Image
"Basia's Palace" marks a vibrant shift in Basia Bulat's musical journey, presenting a collection of songs that intertwine her signature folk roots with lush electronic arrangements. Tracks like "Disco Polo" pay homage to her Polish heritage, infusing celebratory pop elements, while "Spirit" and "My Angel" exude a buoyant energy. Despite its upbeat tone, the album explores themes of heartache and introspection, with "The Moon" and "Curtain Call" showcasing its more melancholic side. While some critics note it may not significantly expand her fanbase, Basia’s Palace is a warm, nostalgic, and cohesive listening experience. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Wild God (2024)

Image
Wild God by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds marks a profound evolution in the band's sound and thematic exploration. Following the tragic losses Cave has endured, this album offers a more hopeful and expansive view of the world, while still steeped in the themes of grief and existential reflection that have characterized his recent work. The album features lush, layered instrumentation, including contributions from Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, and showcases the full force of The Bad Seeds. Tracks like "Frogs" and "Conversion" blend cosmic gospel with symphonic rock, creating a sound that is both haunting and uplifting. Wild God is a powerful, cathartic experience, illustrating Cave's ability to transform personal pain into universal art ( Pitchfork , The Fire Note , louder ) .
