Neptunian Maximalism - Nāgabhūtaṃ (2026)

Image
Nāgabhūtaṃ is an intense mix of free jazz, drone, doom and tribal percussion that often feels more like a ritual than a traditional album. The improvised nature of the performance gives it a real sense of danger, and when the saxophone, guitar and drums all collide, it can sound absolutely huge. The problem is that it also asks for a lot of patience. There is very little structure, almost no hooks, and several passages feel more interesting than actually enjoyable. I like the atmosphere and the ambition, but I rarely felt the need to hear where it was going next. A unique and impressive performance, but definitely more something I respect than something I would regularly replay. Pros Massive, hypnotic atmosphere Strong percussion and saxophone interplay Genuinely adventurous and unpredictable Cons Very little conventional structure Several slow and uneventful passages Difficult to replay casually Genre : Drone Metal Country : Belgium Final Verdict: 62% (Good Album) Yearly Ranking : 4...

Sunn O))) - Sunn O))) (2026)

Image
This feels like entering a structure rather than listening to an album. The weight is immediate — low-end pressure, layered guitars, air moving in slow waves. It’s controlled and intentional. What keeps it working is the internal motion. Even at this pace, the tones shift, the density breathes, and the silence carries tension. It doesn’t feel static — just extremely restrained. But it never quite converts that pressure into a decisive moment. The tension accumulates, expands, sustains — but doesn’t break. I stay inside it, but I don’t get that irreversible payoff. I respect the discipline and the scale. I just don’t feel the release. Pros Monumental physical presence The sound isn’t just heard — it’s felt. The density and low-end pressure create a full-body experience. Absolute identity and conviction No compromise. This is fully within their ritualistic drone language, executed with precision. Micro-level evolution Subtle shifts in tone, feedback, and layering reward deep liste...

Neptunian Maximalism's Le Sacre Du Soleil Invaincu , released on April 11, 2025, is a sprawling, two-hour sonic odyssey that melds drone metal, free jazz, and Hindustani classical music. Recorded live over four days in London's St. John’s on Bethnal Green church, the album's three movements—“At Dusk,” “Arcana XX,” and “At Dawn”—are structured around ragas Marwa, Todi, and Bairagi, respectively. The ensemble employs instruments like the surbahar, zurna, and electric saz, creating a dense tapestry of sound that oscillates between meditative passages and intense crescendos. Critics have lauded the album's immersive quality and its ability to transport listeners through a ritualistic journey that transcends conventional genre boundaries. Le Sacre Du Soleil Invaincu stands as a monumental work that challenges and rewards in equal measure. Sources: Bandcamp Bandcamp Daily The Progressive Subway Your Last Rites Louder Than War Genre : Drone Metal Country : Belgium ...
