Enrico Pieranunzi - Improclassica (2026)
I get what Improclassica is aiming for, and I respect the craft behind it, but as a listening experience it stays more agreeable than compelling. The jazz–classical dialogue is handled with taste and restraint, yet that same restraint keeps the record from generating real tension. Pieranunzi plays beautifully, the orchestra sounds refined, but the friction never quite sharpens — it feels like a polite conversation rather than an argument worth following closely. I’m engaged in the moment, but rarely pulled back once it’s over.
Pros
-
High-level musicianship throughout – Piano touch, trio interplay, and orchestral execution are all unquestionably solid.
-
Thoughtful jazz–classical integration – The orchestra isn’t just wallpaper; arrangements are considered and respectful of space.
-
Elegant, mature tone – Calm, lyrical, and well-paced; nothing feels clumsy or overreaching.
Cons
-
Low dramatic tension – The fusion rarely creates real risk or payoff; it settles into comfort too quickly.
-
Blurred identity – Too jazz for classical immersion, too classical to feel like a jazz statement.
-
Limited replay pull – Pleasant on first listen, but few moments demand return visits.
