Lucinda Williams - World's Gone Wrong (2026)

I hear the honesty immediately, but I don’t feel the urgency. World’s Gone Wrong sounds like Lucinda stepping aside and letting tradition speak for her, and while that restraint is respectable, it also flattens what usually makes her essential to me. The performances are solid, the mood is consistent, and the voice carries real weight — but the album rarely pushes beyond reverent preservation. I don’t doubt her connection to these songs; I just miss the sense of authorship and tension that makes her records feel necessary rather than optional.

Pros

  1. Convincing vocal grain – Her voice sells every line without strain or affectation.

  2. Song choices feel sincere – The blues and folk standards suit her worldview; no cosplay.

  3. Unforced, minimal arrangements – Nothing distracts from the songs themselves.

Cons

  1. Cover dilute identity – Without her writing, the record loses the sharp specificity I expect from her.

  2. Narrow emotional range – The mood stays heavy and subdued without meaningful contrast.

  3. Low replay pull – Once absorbed, there’s little that draws me back compared to her authored albums.
