Grace Ives - Girlfriend (2026)

This feels like an album that has the material, but not the conversion.

The ideas are there — emotionally and sonically. The production is active, detailed, constantly shifting. You can tell she’s building a world rather than just writing songs.

But structurally, it never fully locks in. The choruses don’t consistently land, and the emotional weight stays slightly at a distance. It feels like she’s observing her own instability rather than being caught inside it.

So instead of peaks, you get fragments. Moments that suggest something bigger, but don’t fully arrive.

It’s interesting.
It’s personal.
It just doesn’t quite become necessary.

Pros

Clear artistic identity
The glitchy, diaristic pop world is recognisable and authored — not generic bedroom pop.

Detailed sonic palette
There’s constant micro-activity in the production — synth fragments, textures, subtle shifts.

Intimate thematic focus
The subject matter (self, relationships, instability) feels personal and grounded.

Cons

Weak chorus inevitability
Too many tracks don’t reach a decisive melodic lift — they hover instead of landing.

Emotional stakes feel controlled
Even with heavy themes, the delivery rarely feels urgent or at risk.

Fragmented structure
Songs often feel like sketches or emotional snapshots rather than fully built arcs.
