Mayhem - Liturgy of Death (2026)

This record feels like a ritual rather than an assault. The pacing is deliberate, the atmosphere dense, and Attila’s voice drifts through the songs like a priest of something dark and ancient.

What works is the control. Nothing feels sloppy or nostalgic. The band know exactly how to sustain tension and keep the mood oppressive.

But I keep waiting for the moment where the ceremony erupts into something overwhelming. The builds stay contained, the riffs serve the atmosphere more than they carve themselves into memory.

It’s serious black metal from veterans who still understand the language.
It just never quite crosses into transcendence.

Pros

Strong ritual atmosphere
The album maintains a dark ceremonial tone throughout. It feels intentional and cohesive rather than chaotic.

Distinct vocal presence
Attila Csihar’s delivery constantly shifts between chanting, whispering and harsh vocals, adding theatrical depth.

Veteran compositional control
The long tracks feel structured rather than meandering, showing the band’s experience with pacing.

Cons

Climaxes rarely explode
The builds feel restrained and rarely reach overwhelming payoff.

Riff memorability is moderate
Many tremolo patterns function atmospherically rather than carving strong melodic identities.

Limited sonic evolution
It refines the Daemon era sound rather than opening a new direction for the band.
