Julian Pregardien & Ensemble Pygmalion - J.S. Bach: Johannes-Passion, BWV 245 (2026)
I admire this more than I love it. I can hear the quality almost immediately — the performance is focused, disciplined, and clearly knows exactly what it wants to do. The problem is that I end up appreciating its construction more than feeling carried away by it.
Julian Prégardien gives the Evangelist real presence, and that keeps the recording alive for a long stretch. There’s emotional weight here, but it feels measured rather than urgent. I never get the sense that things are pushing toward a point of no return.
The structure works in theory: it keeps moving, it keeps pointing forward. But after a while, the devotional flow starts to level out. Instead of accumulating tension, sections begin to feel equivalent in emotional weight.
By the end, I’m left with respect rather than impact. I hear craft, conviction, and intelligence, but I don’t get enough escalation or emotional payoff to push it into the higher tier. A lot of it feels admirable without becoming necessary.
Pros
The narrative pull still works → I keep feeling a clear direction through the performance, and that sense of inevitability carries a lot of the runtimeJulian Prégardien gives real emotional credibility → the Evangelist role feels inhabited rather than simply sung
The recording has strong dramatic discipline → nothing feels random or decorative; the intent is always clear
Cons
I miss stronger arrival moments → I respect the structure more than I feel overwhelmed by it
The devotional pacing starts to flatten impact → some sections begin to blend together instead of accumulating pressure
The emotional tone stays too controlled → I hear seriousness, but not enough danger or instability
