BIG|BRAVE - in grief or in hope (2026)
I appreciate the intent behind In Grief or In Hope more than the execution. BIG|BRAVE clearly aim for something emotionally raw and immersive, and the album succeeds in creating a heavy, mournful atmosphere from beginning to end. The performances feel committed, and the band maintains a strong identity throughout.
The issue is that the record spends too much time circling its ideas instead of developing them. The tension is present, but it often remains at a similar level for extended periods. Rather than building toward major emotional or musical releases, many tracks seem content to sustain a mood. As a result, the experience can feel more absorbing than rewarding.
The textures are rich and carefully crafted, but they frequently carry more of the album's impact than the actual compositions. I hear grief and vulnerability in the sound, yet I don't hear enough transformation. The melodies are understated, the climaxes are restrained, and several passages blur together once the album is over.
What keeps the score above the mid-50s is the band's conviction and uniqueness. This is not a generic post-metal album, and there is genuine emotional weight behind it. But for my taste, atmosphere alone is never enough. I need stronger escalation, more memorable thematic development, and moments that feel earned rather than merely sustained.
In the end, In Grief or In Hope strikes me as a respectable and sincere record that creates a compelling emotional space, but one that doesn't provide enough movement or payoff to make that space truly unforgettable.
Pros
Strong sense of atmosphere and emotional seriousness.Distinctive artistic identity that avoids generic post-metal tropes.
The live-recorded sound gives the album weight and physical presence.
Cons
Long stretches feel static, with limited escalation or payoff.
Texture and mood often replace memorable motifs or structural development.
The album's emotional themes are compelling, but the songwriting doesn't always transform them into impactful moments.
