Kim Petras - Detour (2026)
I can hear what Detour is trying to do, and I respect the attempt to move away from safer pop formulas. The album is louder, stranger and more personality-driven than most of Kim Petras' previous work, which immediately makes it more interesting. There is a clear effort to embrace a messier, more underground electronic aesthetic rather than simply chasing mainstream dance-pop trends.
The problem is that the album often mistakes stimulation for development. Many tracks arrive with a strong surface impression—distorted synths, aggressive beats, chaotic transitions—but don't evolve much beyond that first burst of energy. I keep waiting for bigger payoffs, stronger hooks or moments that tie the album together emotionally, and they rarely arrive.
What remains is a collection of songs that are often fun in the moment but less memorable once they're over. The production carries much of the experience, while the songwriting frequently feels secondary. Even when the album experiments, the experimentation doesn't always translate into greater emotional weight or stronger structure.
In the end, I find Detour more interesting than successful. It has enough identity to avoid feeling generic, but not enough escalation, melodic staying power or emotional consequence to become truly compelling. I admire the direction more than I enjoy the result.
Pros
More distinctive and personality-driven than much of her earlier mainstream material. The hyperpop/bloghouse production brings energy and occasional moments of genuine excitement.
A few tracks suggest a more interesting artistic direction than straightforward dance-pop.
Cons
Too many songs rely on texture, attitude and production tricks rather than strong songwriting.
The album struggles to build momentum across its runtime; peaks arrive but rarely feel earned.
Emotional stakes remain low, making much of the record feel disposable after the initial impact.
