Slift - Fantasia (2026)

I admire the ambition more than I enjoy the album itself. Fantasia is constantly reaching for cosmic scale, and there is no shortage of energy or commitment. The musicians clearly know how to create impact, and the record never lacks intensity.

The issue is that intensity becomes the default setting. When everything is huge, very little actually feels huge. The album spends so much time pushing forward that the climaxes lose some of their weight. I keep waiting for moments that fundamentally transform the material, but many tracks simply become larger versions of themselves.

The atmosphere is impressive, but atmosphere alone no longer carries much value for me. The best psychedelic records use texture to support structure. Here, the texture sometimes becomes the structure. The result is immersive but also slightly exhausting, especially across the full runtime.

There are flashes of greatness throughout the album. The band's identity is undeniable, and some of the instrumental passages generate genuine momentum. But I rarely feel the emotional gravity or long-range narrative that would elevate the record beyond a very good heavy psych experience.

In the end, Fantasia feels bigger than it feels deeper. I respect the scale, the musicianship and the vision, but I come away remembering the density more than the destinations. That's enough for a solid score, but not enough to make it one of the truly essential records in this lane.

Pros

Massive sonic identity

The album immediately establishes its own universe. The fusion of space rock, heavy psych and krautrock remains distinctive and recognizable.

Strong instrumental commitment

The performances are intense and energetic. The band fully commits to the scale and ambition of the material.

Rich textural architecture

Layers of guitars, synths and effects create a dense and immersive sound world that rewards attentive listening.

Cons

Escalation often feels overstated rather than earned

The music is constantly intense, which reduces the impact of the actual climaxes. Many peaks arrive already at maximum volume.

Motif development is weaker than the runtime suggests

The album presents many ideas but doesn't always transform them enough. Sections expand horizontally rather than evolve vertically.

Jam drift remains a problem

Several passages prioritize atmosphere and propulsion over structural necessity, creating a feeling of excess.
