Epimetheus - Perseus 9 (2026)
I appreciate the ambition behind Perseus 9. The band builds a convincing world where the sci-fi concept, thick guitar tone and spacious production all work together naturally. It never feels like style for its own sake, and the atmosphere remains one of the album's strongest qualities throughout.
The problem is that the songwriting doesn't capitalize on that foundation. The long compositions spend a lot of time circling the same ideas, and while the repetition reinforces the mood, it also slows the record's forward movement. I keep waiting for moments that justify the extended runtimes with bigger emotional or musical payoffs, but they arrive less often than I expect.
The riffs are undeniably heavy, yet only a handful truly stay with me once the album ends. Likewise, the vocals serve the songs competently without adding much personality or urgency. Everything is well executed, but very little reaches the level where it becomes genuinely memorable.
In the end, I respect Perseus 9 more than I connect with it. It succeeds as an immersive doom record with a strong sense of place, but its reliance on atmosphere over development keeps it from leaving a lasting emotional impact. I enjoy spending time in its world, yet I rarely feel compelled by where the journey ultimately leads.
pros
- The album creates a convincing cosmic atmosphere that remains coherent from beginning to end.
- The riffs carry real weight and give the songs a solid physical presence.
- The organic production avoids modern sterility and suits the material well.
cons
- The songwriting leans too heavily on repetition and loses momentum over the longer tracks.
- The climaxes don't deliver enough emotional payoff after the extended build-ups.
- The vocal performances blend into the atmosphere instead of becoming memorable focal points.
