Boundaries - Yearning: The unbeautiful after (2026)


Boundaries deliver another intensely personal mix of metallic hardcore and melodic metalcore on Yearning: The Unbeautiful After. The riffs are heavy, the breakdowns are effective and Matthew McDougal’s desperate vocals give the album more emotional weight than the average release in the genre.

Unfortunately, fourteen tracks are simply too many for material this repetitive. Most songs follow the same pattern of crushing aggression, vulnerable melodic passage and final breakdown. The formula works, but the impact gradually decreases, while the guest appearances do little to change the album’s overall direction.

There are several strong moments and the execution remains convincing, but Boundaries mostly refine an established sound rather than pushing it forward. Powerful and sincere, yet too familiar and overlong to leave a lasting impression.

I appreciate what this re-recording accomplishes because it finally gives these songs the sound they always deserved. The production is bigger, the performances are sharper, and the riffs hit with far more authority than they did on the original release. The youthful aggression is still there, but it's delivered with much greater precision. Where it loses me is in the writing itself. Most of the songs are built around the same formula of fast riffs, blast beats and breakdowns, and after a while they begin to blur together. The constant intensity creates excitement in the short term, but it also leaves very little room for tension, contrast or memorable climaxes. Instead of building toward defining moments, the album often feels like one long sustained assault. I also miss a stronger emotional dimension.
