Robyn Hitchcock - The Confuser (2026)
The Confuser finds Robyn Hitchcock comfortably returning to his familiar mix of psychedelic pop, jangling guitars and surreal lyrics. The songs are pleasant, concise and professionally played, but very little feels essential.
There are a few catchy moments, and Hitchcock’s personality remains intact, yet the album often sounds like a softer and less inspired version of ideas he has already explored many times. The whimsical lyrics occasionally amuse, but they can also feel automatic, while several songs disappear almost immediately after they end.
This is an agreeable late-career record rather than a particularly strong one. It is never unpleasant, but it lacks the melodies, energy and eccentric spark required to make a lasting impression.
