King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Phantom Island (2025)

Phantom Island marks King Gizzard's 27th studio album and their most adventurous orchestral statement yet, blending their psychedelic and country-rock roots with lush orchestral flourishes. Tracks like the title cut and “Deadstick” bring brass and strings into their typically kraut-tinged grooves, recalling ’70s studio-slick psychedelia and Blaxploitation-era soul. “Sea of Doubt” combines twangy country-rock with intoxicating woodwinds, while “Aerodynamic” and “Panpsych” seamlessly fuse funk guitar and cinematic strings. Though some passages—like “Lonely Cosmos” and “Silent Spirit”—feel overly dense, when the orchestration clicks it’s magical, especially on “Spacesick,” a tender sci-fi reflection elevated by horns and strings. It’s a daring expansion of their palette: sometimes excess, often exhilarating, and always unmistakably Gizzard.
