Green Carnation - A Dark Poem, Pt. I: The Shores of Melancholia (2025)

Green Carnation’s The Shores of Melancholia inaugurates a long-gestating trilogy with haunting ambition. The album melds grief-soaked lyrics and dynamic riffwork, opening with textured intros (“As Silence Took You”) before channeling melodic ferocity in “In Your Paradise.” Its fearless genre shifts—like Enslaved’s Grutle Kjellson’s black-metal growls on “The Slave That You Are”—add surprising contrast to their gothic-driven progression. The title track produces melancholic grandeur in compact form, while closer “Too Close to the Flame” delivers a cathartic, nine-minute crescendo blending doom, melody, and momentum. Overall, this is a cohesive, emotionally resonant return to form for the Norwegian prog-metal veterans.
