Preservation - Sortilège (2025)
Sortilège is a deeply textured and immersive album, built with Preservation’s sample-laden, cinematic production that gives every track space to breathe while still rattling with intensity. Gabe ‘Nandez brings a commanding baritone voice, weaving dense lyrical imagery that straddles personal struggle, social critique, and cultural roots, often in bilingual or multilingual turns. The album moves between moments of haunting minimalism and full force confrontations—tracks like “War” with Billy Woods are jagged and urgent, while “Ball & Chain” and “Spire” close in on introspection and weight. Throughout, there’s a ritualistic feel: the influence of francophone and Malian heritage, of old boom-bap DNA, of sampled artifacts from record crates, all fused into something both familiar and untamed. In sum, Sortilège doesn’t settle for easy comfort; it challenges, it provokes, and it rewards the listener willing to sit with its complexity.
