Megadeth - Megadeth (2026)

This feels like a band still capable of snapping into classic shape, but no longer sustaining it across a full album. There are riffs here that remind me why Megadeth mattered — sharp, twitchy, technically alert — yet too often they’re framed by songs that feel routine rather than necessary. The energy is professional, even proud, but rarely urgent. As a late-career record, it’s competent and occasionally satisfying, but it never escapes the sense of being a legacy exercise instead of a statement that needs to exist.

Pros

  1. Riff craft still intact – When the band locks into thrash mode, the muscle memory is undeniable.

  2. Guitar work carries authority – Solos and leads remain a clear strength, technically sharp and stylistically consistent.

  3. Production does the job – Clean, punchy, no major missteps; it serves the material without sabotaging it.

Cons

  1. Template songwriting – Too many tracks feel assembled from familiar Megadeth parts without real escalation.

  2. Low emotional or conceptual stakes – Nothing here feels urgent or risky; it plays it safe almost by design.

  3. Momentum drops fast – Strong moments don’t accumulate into a convincing arc, making the album fade rather than land.
