Mika - Hyperlove (2026)
This is where MIKA starts to lose me. Hyperlove feels less like an album he needed to make and more like one he negotiated into existence. The personality is still audible — that elastic voice, the instinct for uplift — but it’s buried under mid-2010s pop polish that drains urgency and risk. I don’t hear failure here, just caution, and that’s worse. Too often the songs feel finished before they’ve said anything interesting, and the emotional stakes never rise enough to justify the gloss.
Pros
-
Natural pop instinct – Even at his weakest, MIKA can still write a functional chorus.
-
Recognizable vocal identity – His voice remains expressive and distinctive, not anonymous.
-
Occasional flashes of theatrical charm – Brief moments hint at the baroque-pop ambition he once leaned into.
Cons
-
Generic electropop production – Trend-following sheen flattens dynamics and personality.
-
Low emotional commitment – The album gestures at drama without earning it.
-
Disposable sequencing – Feels playlist-ready rather than album-shaped, with little replay gravity.
