David Keenan - Just for today (2026)
I admire the idea more than the execution. Recording and releasing an album in a single day gives Just for Today a certain romantic urgency, but that urgency doesn’t always translate into fully formed songs. The intimacy is there — voice, guitar, room — but too often it feels like I’m hearing sketches rather than statements. Some lines cut through with that poetic Irish melancholy Keenan does well, yet the momentum drifts, and the minimal setup starts to blur track into track. I don’t dislike it; I just don’t feel compelled by it. It’s honest, but honesty alone isn’t enough to hold my attention for the full runtime.
Pros
-
Authentic, unfiltered atmosphere – The live-to-tape immediacy gives the album emotional transparency.
-
Moments of strong lyricism – When the writing locks in, it carries real weight.
-
Clear artistic intent – The concept is bold and committed; there’s no overproduction or compromise.
Cons
-
Underdeveloped songwriting – Several tracks feel like drafts rather than finished pieces.
-
Limited sonic variation – Voice and acoustic guitar dominate without enough dynamic lift.
-
Low replay value – Once the spontaneity novelty fades, there’s little structural or melodic pull to revisit.
