Bear McCreary - God of War Sons of Sparta (Original Soundtrack) (2026)

I enjoy this more than most modern game soundtracks because it actually understands momentum. Themes come back, tracks evolve, and there’s a real attempt to shape the music into an album instead of a collection of cinematic background cues.

The retro angle helps more than I expected. The electronic textures give the soundtrack energy and movement, while the orchestral side keeps it from feeling gimmicky. It creates a world that’s easy to stay inside for a while.

At the same time, I don’t think it reaches the emotional or structural intensity needed to go much higher for me. The big moments are effective, but they don’t completely take over the album emotionally. I hear strong craftsmanship more than overwhelming necessity.

The runtime also hurts it a bit. After a while, the soundtrack starts relying on the same heroic energy field without escalating enough beyond it. Still, compared to most contemporary AAA scores, this feels much more replayable and much more intentional.

 Pros

Strong recurring themes → the soundtrack actually gives me motifs I can remember afterward
Good sense of propulsion → the retro/action structure keeps the album moving instead of drifting into ambient filler
Distinct sonic world → the Greek orchestral elements mixed with retro electronics give it a recognizable identity

Cons

Emotional stakes stay limited → it feels exciting more than emotionally necessary
Some late-album fatigue → the runtime starts diluting the strongest material
Climaxes don’t fully overwhelm → the peaks land, but they rarely feel transcendent or crushing
