Cam Kahin - CHUG (2026)
At first it feels convincing because the album has real physical force behind it. The distortion is thick, the vocals sound genuinely exhausted, and the momentum keeps everything moving. But after a while I realize it’s mostly sustaining the same emotional state without developing it.
The problem is that intensity alone isn’t enough for me anymore. The album keeps pushing, but it rarely transforms. The climaxes arrive in almost the same way every time, so eventually the emotional impact starts flattening instead of building.
I still hear sincerity in it, which saves it from feeling disposable, but the songwriting underneath the atmosphere isn’t strong enough to carry repeated listens. A lot of the tracks merge into one long blur of tension and release without enough distinct payoff moments.
In the end I remember the sensation of the album more than the actual compositions.
Pros
The physical heaviness works well → the distortion and pressure give the album real presenceThere’s genuine emotional frustration underneath it → it doesn’t feel fake or scene-calculated
The momentum stays consistent → it avoids dragging or collapsing completely
Cons
The songwriting feels underdeveloped → a lot of tracks blur into the same emotional and structural shape
The climaxes don’t actually evolve enough → the album stays intense without truly escalating
The melodic identity is weak → I remember texture and shouting more than actual songs
