Elder - Through Zero (2026)

I can hear the craft immediately. The production is rich, the playing is excellent, and the album creates a fully formed world that is easy to sink into. On paper, it has many of the ingredients I usually like: long songs, progressive structures, recurring motifs, and plenty of movement.

The problem is that the movement doesn't translate into enough consequence. The tracks keep evolving, but they rarely arrive somewhere that feels dramatically different from where they started. I spend a lot of time admiring transitions, textures and arrangements, but not enough time feeling genuine anticipation for what's around the corner.

The atmosphere is impressive, yet it becomes the album's main source of momentum. Instead of tension creating the climaxes, immersion often carries the experience. That works for a while, but over the course of the record I start wanting stronger payoffs and more emotional risk.

By the end, I respect the album more than I love it. It's clearly well made, consistently engaging, and more thoughtful than most heavy psych records, but it never quite generates the sense of inevitability or emotional gravity that would push it into a higher tier for me. A good album, sometimes a very good one, but not one that fully escapes the genre's tendency toward beautiful drift.

Pros

The musicianship is consistently strong → the band can sustain long tracks without them completely falling apart
The production creates a convincing world → warm, expansive and immersive without sounding sterile
There are flashes of genuine progression → some sections hint at the kind of long-form payoff I usually look for

Cons

The escalation is weaker than the runtime suggests → the songs keep moving but rarely reach a truly transformative climax
Too much atmosphere is doing the heavy lifting → texture often substitutes for tension
The emotional stakes remain low → I admire the music more than I feel compelled by it
