Immanuel Wilkins - Live at the Village Vanguard Vol. 2 (2026)
I connect with this more than I expected because the live setting gives it a sense of purpose that keeps it from becoming purely cerebral. The interaction inside the group is probably the biggest strength here. It feels alive the whole time — people listening, pushing, reacting. There’s tension in that.
What keeps me engaged is that it doesn’t feel academic. Even when things get dense or abstract, I can still feel emotional intent underneath it. The performances carry weight and urgency, and that matters more to me than complexity by itself.
But I still don’t completely lock into it. I admire a lot of what’s happening more than I fully absorb it. Some passages feel like they’re circling ideas rather than building toward something irreversible. I keep waiting for stronger thematic arrivals — moments that stop being impressive and become memorable.
I come away respecting the musicianship and enjoying parts of the experience, but I’m still holding a little distance from it emotionally. Enough works that I’d return to it, but not enough that it fully takes over.
Pros
The live chemistry really pulls me in → the quartet feels fully connected and constantly reacting in real timeThere’s a real emotional seriousness underneath it → it never feels like technical jazz for its own sake
The rhythmic movement keeps evolving → even long passages breathe and shift naturally
Cons
I still miss stronger melodic anchors → a lot of moments impress me, but fewer actually stay with me afterward
Some improvisations stretch beyond their payoff → the expansion occasionally weakens the impact
The album prioritizes process over arrival → I hear momentum, but not always a destination
