Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love (2026)

I admire the ambition here more than the execution. The move toward new wave and alternative pop influences is an interesting one, and it prevents the album from feeling like a simple continuation of GUTS. There is a clearer aesthetic identity than on many contemporary pop records, and Olivia Rodrigo remains a naturally charismatic songwriter.

The problem is that the album often feels more concerned with maintaining a mood than creating momentum. The songs are pleasant to inhabit, but they rarely build toward the kind of emotional or melodic peaks that I expect from a record operating in this lane. For an album built around complicated feelings hiding beneath apparent happiness, I wanted more tension, more rupture and more moments that genuinely changed the emotional temperature.

The songwriting is competent throughout, but I don't hear many tracks that demand repeated listens because of their melodic strength alone. The production and atmosphere do a lot of the heavy lifting. While that creates a coherent listening experience, it also contributes to a sense of uniformity across the album.

What keeps the record above average is Olivia herself. Her voice, perspective and instinct for emotional storytelling are still strong enough to carry weaker material. But compared with the best modern pop albums, I find the choruses less memorable, the emotional voltage lower and the overall arc less impactful.

In the end, I hear an artist taking a worthwhile creative step, but not yet translating that evolution into consistently compelling songs. The identity is there; the payoff isn't always. For me, it's a respectable and occasionally intriguing record that falls short of its ambitions.

Pros

Olivia's personality still comes through clearly, even in a different sonic direction.
The new wave/post-punk influences give the album more character than standard contemporary pop.
A handful of tracks suggest a compelling artistic evolution.

Cons

Too few truly inevitable choruses for a pop album.
Emotional stakes are often implied rather than fully felt.
The album maintains a consistent mood but doesn't generate enough escalation or payoff.
