Roman Candle - UNADULTERATED (2026)
I appreciate how uncompromising this record is. It feels raw, damaged and emotionally exposed from the opening moments. There is no attempt to soften the edges or package the chaos into something more accessible. That sincerity gives the album much of its power.
The strongest aspect is the conviction behind the performances. The vocals sound genuinely desperate, and the band maintains a level of tension that keeps the album engaging even when the songwriting itself becomes less distinctive. The atmosphere feels earned rather than manufactured.
Where the record loses points for me is in its overall architecture. The intensity arrives immediately, but it rarely evolves into something larger. Instead of building toward a devastating climax, the album often operates within the same emotional register. The result is a collection of strong impacts rather than a truly cumulative experience.
I also find that many of the individual songs blur together after repeated listens. The emotional force remains obvious, but the lack of standout motifs or transformative moments reduces replay value. I remember the feeling of the album more than its specific musical ideas.
In the end, UNADULTERATED succeeds through honesty and commitment rather than compositional depth. It is powerful, focused and convincing, but I don't hear enough escalation, variation or memorable development to push it beyond the mid-60s range. A strong statement, though not one that completely transcends its scene.
Pros
Genuine emotional urgency
The record never sounds detached. Every scream feels committed, giving the album a level of conviction that many modern metalcore releases lack.
Focused and efficient
The short runtime works in its favor. It delivers its message without unnecessary filler or excessive repetition.
Distinct atmosphere
The combination of desperation, aggression and spiritual imagery creates a recognizable emotional world.
Cons
Escalation ceiling
The album starts intense and largely stays there. Because the pressure is already maxed out early, later tracks struggle to feel bigger than what came before.
Limited memorable motifs
The emotional impact is stronger than the songwriting itself. After the album ends, relatively few riffs or melodic moments remain clearly identifiable.
Narrow emotional palette
The record excels at anguish and catharsis but offers little contrast. More variation could have made the heavier moments hit harder.
