Kelela - new avatar (2026)
I respect the ambition behind new avatar, but I struggle to connect with it beyond appreciating the craftsmanship. Kelela explores new textures with confidence, blending alternative rock, shoegaze and electronic elements into her established R&B sound, yet the album often feels more concerned with atmosphere than with writing songs that leave a lasting impression. The production is detailed and immersive, and her vocals remain effortlessly expressive, but many tracks drift by without building enough emotional momentum. I admire the willingness to evolve, though I rarely feel rewarded by the destination. By the end, I remember the overall mood more than any individual moments, and that makes the album easier to admire than to revisit. It's a thoughtful artistic experiment that succeeds technically, but it doesn't deliver the emotional connection or replay value I was hoping for.
Pros
Beautifully layered and immersive production.Kelela's vocal performance remains consistently excellent.
Takes genuine artistic risks instead of repeating past successes.
Cons
Prioritizes texture over memorable songwriting.Emotional impact remains surprisingly restrained.
The album leaves a stronger impression as an aesthetic experience than as a collection of songs.
