VOCES8 & Ringmasters - Shall We Gather (2026)


I appreciate the beauty and precision of Shall We Gather. VOCES8 delivers immaculate ensemble singing, flawless tuning and an atmosphere that feels warm and genuinely uplifting. The arrangements are elegant without becoming overly showy, allowing the music's spiritual character to come through naturally. At the same time, I find the album a little too restrained. While every performance is technically impressive, many pieces share a similar emotional register, and the overall journey doesn't build toward many moments of real dramatic release. I admire it more than I love it. It's the kind of album I return to when I'm looking for serenity rather than excitement, and although it never disappoints, it also doesn't leave many unforgettable emotional peaks.

I appreciate what this re-recording accomplishes because it finally gives these songs the sound they always deserved. The production is bigger, the performances are sharper, and the riffs hit with far more authority than they did on the original release. The youthful aggression is still there, but it's delivered with much greater precision. Where it loses me is in the writing itself. Most of the songs are built around the same formula of fast riffs, blast beats and breakdowns, and after a while they begin to blur together. The constant intensity creates excitement in the short term, but it also leaves very little room for tension, contrast or memorable climaxes. Instead of building toward defining moments, the album often feels like one long sustained assault. I also miss a stronger emotional dimension.
