Carla dal Forno - Confession (2026)

Confession has a strong concept and a very controlled aesthetic, but the actual songwriting is too slight to sustain the praise surrounding it. Carla dal Forno’s detached vocals, skeletal basslines and dubby minimalism create a coherent atmosphere, yet the record too often mistakes restraint for depth.

The best songs — especially “Under the Covers” and “Going Out” — show how effective this approach can be when there is a memorable melodic core. Elsewhere, though, the material feels underwritten, with too many tracks relying on essentially the same rhythmic and textural vocabulary.

The short instrumental pieces do little to help. They work as transitions, but not as substantial compositions, and they make an already sparse album feel even thinner. The emotional unease in the lyrics is interesting, but musically Confession rarely develops enough to match it.

A tasteful, intelligent record with a few strong moments, but also a lot of elegant emptiness.

Pros
Strong atmosphere
Interesting lyrical tension
A few genuinely memorable songs

Cons
Very repetitive
Too many underdeveloped ideas
Interludes add little real substance
