Greg Mendez - Beauty Land (2026)

Beauty Land is intimate, economical and clearly written by someone who knows how to make very small songs carry real emotional weight. Greg Mendez has a sharp instinct for detail, and tracks like “I Wanna Feel Pretty” and “Sunsick” can be genuinely affecting without ever becoming melodramatic.

But the album’s modesty is also its main limitation. Too many songs feel like sketches rather than fully developed pieces, the sonic palette barely changes, and the Elliott Smith influence remains so visible that Mendez’s own identity occasionally gets blurred. Seventeen tracks in just over half an hour sounds concise on paper, but in practice several of them pass without leaving much behind.

There is real songwriting ability here, and the best moments are quietly excellent. As a full album, though, Beauty Land feels slight, overly familiar and less distinctive than its strongest reviews suggest.

Pros
Strong lyrical economy
A few genuinely moving songs
Consistent intimate atmosphere

Cons
Too many underdeveloped miniatures
Elliott Smith influence is hard to escape
Limited variation across the album
