The Womack Sisters - The Womack Sisters (2026)

The Womack Sisters is a remarkably assured debut. The family harmonies are the obvious attraction, but what makes the album work is how naturally those voices sit inside Daptone's warm, restrained production. Nothing feels forced: the gospel roots, classic soul arrangements and more contemporary lyrical details all belong to the same world.

The songwriting is not consistently exceptional, but the best tracks have real personality, especially when the sisters move beyond pure revivalism and let their own history and humour into the songs. The album is polished without becoming sterile, and the vocal interplay gives even the less memorable material considerable charm.

It still operates within a very familiar retro-soul language, so I wouldn't push it much higher. But at 72, the craft, performances and emotional credibility clearly outweigh that lack of originality.

Superb vocal harmonies
Warm, elegant production

Cons
Very familiar Daptone-style sound
A few songs are more tasteful than memorable
