Cindy Blackman Santana - Coherence (2026)

Coherence puts Cindy Blackman Santana’s drumming at the centre of a dense mix of jazz fusion, spiritual jazz and psychedelic rock. Her playing is powerful and technically flawless, while Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin add plenty of guitar firepower.

Unfortunately, the album feels more like an extended demonstration of musicianship than a coherent collection of compositions. At around 80 minutes, the solos, interludes and mystical atmosphere become repetitive. The performances remain impressive, but too few tracks leave a lasting impression once the playing stops.

There is no shortage of talent or ambition here, but the album badly needs tighter editing and stronger melodies. Technically excellent, occasionally exciting, but ultimately overlong and surprisingly forgettable.

Pros
Outstanding drumming
Excellent musicianship throughout
A few powerful fusion passages

Cons
Much too long
Weak and forgettable compositions
Excessive solos and interludes
