Sir Richard Bishop - Hillbilly Erotica '2026)


Hillbilly Erotica is a collection of raw solo guitar pieces mixing American primitivism, country picking, raga and improvisation. Sir Richard Bishop is obviously a gifted guitarist, and the playing has a loose, unpredictable energy that can be quite enjoyable.

But too many tracks feel like sketches rather than real compositions. The spontaneous approach gives the album character, but also makes it repetitive and strangely distant. There are interesting technical ideas throughout, yet very few moments that remain memorable once the record ends.

It is well played and occasionally charming, but ultimately feels more like an informal recording session than a fully developed album.

I appreciate what this re-recording accomplishes because it finally gives these songs the sound they always deserved. The production is bigger, the performances are sharper, and the riffs hit with far more authority than they did on the original release. The youthful aggression is still there, but it's delivered with much greater precision. Where it loses me is in the writing itself. Most of the songs are built around the same formula of fast riffs, blast beats and breakdowns, and after a while they begin to blur together. The constant intensity creates excitement in the short term, but it also leaves very little room for tension, contrast or memorable climaxes. Instead of building toward defining moments, the album often feels like one long sustained assault. I also miss a stronger emotional dimension.
