DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ - Makin' Magick (Rewitched) (2026)


Makin' Magick (Rewitched) is colourful, emotional and immediately recognisable, but also massively overextended. DJ Sabrina’s mix of chopped vocals, house loops, pop fragments and nostalgic samples can be genuinely intoxicating, and the new version gives the material more clarity and punch without completely sanding off its homemade charm.

The problem is scale. At more than two hours, the album repeats itself far too often, and several tracks feel like variations on ideas that already worked better earlier. The constant movement and dense sampling sometimes disguise fairly basic underlying grooves, while the emotional maximalism eventually loses some impact through sheer repetition.

There are excellent moments here and a very strong personality, but not enough editing or consistency to make the whole thing essential.

I appreciate what this re-recording accomplishes because it finally gives these songs the sound they always deserved. The production is bigger, the performances are sharper, and the riffs hit with far more authority than they did on the original release. The youthful aggression is still there, but it's delivered with much greater precision. Where it loses me is in the writing itself. Most of the songs are built around the same formula of fast riffs, blast beats and breakdowns, and after a while they begin to blur together. The constant intensity creates excitement in the short term, but it also leaves very little room for tension, contrast or memorable climaxes. Instead of building toward defining moments, the album often feels like one long sustained assault. I also miss a stronger emotional dimension.
