Holding Absence - Modern Life Is Lonely (2026)

This is very good at making everything feel important.

Sometimes a little too good.

“Reanimate” opens with exactly the kind of scale Holding Absence like: atmosphere first, tension underneath, then Lucas Woodland gradually turns the emotional pressure up.

It works.

His voice is still the band’s biggest weapon.

“Reflection” is cleaner and more immediate. Big chorus, sharp production, enough rhythmic detail underneath to stop it becoming generic alternative rock.

But I can already hear the structure.

“Heaven” pushes the melodic side even further.

Again, very effective.

Again, very polished.

The title track is where the concept becomes clearer. The lyrics move away from purely personal pain and toward something broader: isolation inside a permanently connected world.

I like that change.

It gives the record a reason to exist beyond another collection of emotional breakdown songs.

“Take Me With You” is probably one of the more accessible moments, but also one of the places where the production feels slightly too engineered for impact.

Everything arrives exactly where I expect it to.

Then “shells_like_us.int” breaks the momentum, and I actually appreciate that.

The record needs breathing space.

“Whisper Of A Dream” is stronger because the electronics and heavier passages feel more integrated rather than decorative.

The band are clearly trying to stretch their sound here.

“Lucid Love” has one of the biggest hooks.

I understand immediately why it was pushed as a single.

But it is also where I hear the Holding Absence formula most clearly: tension, emotional vocal lift, huge melodic release.

Good song.

Maybe too obvious.

“Scorched Earth” interests me more.

There is more friction.

The heavier sections carry more weight, and the track feels less focused on delivering a perfect chorus every ninety seconds.

That helps.

“lullaby.int” is short enough to function properly as an interlude.

Then “Kyoto Snow” arrives and finally gives the album more space.

This is probably my favorite.

The guitar textures breathe, the pacing slows, and the band stop trying to prove how emotionally massive they can sound.

Ironically, that makes the emotion stronger.

I wish there were slightly more of that across the record.

Holding Absence are very good at intensity.

But intensity becomes less intense when everything is designed to peak.

That is the main thing holding this below 70 for me.

The production is excellent.

Woodland’s performance is excellent.

The album has a clear concept.

There are several songs I would replay.

I just hear the emotional engineering a little too often.

A polished, ambitious and genuinely emotional modern post-hardcore record, with enough experimentation to move the band forward. But the big moments are sometimes so carefully constructed that I hear the design before I feel the impact.
