Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats - Shapes of Midnight (2026)
This is the kind of album I enjoy almost immediately.
And then I start noticing how familiar everything is.
“House by the Grave” is probably the best example of what works.
The organ adds colour, the riff has weight, the middle section actually develops, and the final stretch feels like a real escalation rather than another loop.
That is strong.
The title track is more direct and slightly more metal-oriented. The groove is good, and there is enough movement to stop it becoming pure retro-doom repetition.
“When Evil Wakes” might be even more fun.
The rhythm has more swing, the saxophone gives the track another texture, and the whole thing feels less boxed into the normal Uncle Acid formula.
“Don’t Let It Control You” is short and useful because it breaks the pacing.
I like that.
“Psycho on the Loose” has a strong hook, but this is also where I start hearing the template too clearly.
Fuzz.
Organ.
Creepy vocal.
Repetition.
Vintage horror atmosphere.
It works.
But it works in a way I already know.
“I Won’t Sleep (‘Til You’re Gone)” is more interesting because the guitar lines move closer to Thin Lizzy and NWOBHM territory. That gives the album some needed variation.
“The Other Side of the Sky” is heavier and slower again, but not especially memorable for me.
Then “Sleep No More” closes the record in a darker, more psychedelic way rather than trying to manufacture a huge finale. That restraint is a good choice.
The atmosphere is excellent throughout.
That is probably the album’s main strength.
The analogue production, hazy vocals and guitar tone make the whole thing feel physical rather than polished.
But atmosphere alone does not push something into the 70s.
I need more songs that stay with me after the record ends.
Here, I mostly remember riffs and textures.
That is enough for a good score.
Not a great one.
Strong analogue sound, good riffs and a few genuinely excellent tracks, but too much of it operates inside a formula Uncle Acid already perfected years ago. Enjoyable, atmospheric and solid rather than essential.
