Adult DVD - Adult DVD (2026)
An energetic mix of dance-punk, acid house and indie rock, with some enjoyable grooves and a good sense of humour, but not enough personality or memorable songs to really stand out.
Adult DVD's debut combines British post-punk with the rhythms and synthesizers of nineties rave music. The result sits somewhere between LCD Soundsystem, Soulwax, Happy Mondays and Primal Scream, with a deliberately messy and irreverent approach that works better on some tracks than others.
“Rolling Face” is my favourite track. I particularly enjoy its more hypnotic atmosphere and the way the electronic arrangements have room to develop. It's one of the few moments where the band moves beyond its usual energetic formula and creates something a little more interesting.
“Do As I Please” is an effective opener, with a good transition from indie-rock rhythms to electronic textures. “Coffin Dodger” has an enjoyable groove, while “Real Tree Lee” brings a darker atmosphere and a strong bassline. “Cowboy On Aisle Three” also offers some welcome variation.
The combination of live instruments and electronic production generally works well. The drums and bass provide plenty of energy, and the acid synths add some interesting textures. I also appreciate the humour and the band's willingness to keep things relatively simple and direct.
My main problem is that the influences are far too obvious. I often feel like I'm listening to a collection of familiar sounds from the British indie-dance scene rather than a band with a genuinely distinctive identity. The semi-spoken vocals become repetitive, and several songs rely almost entirely on their rhythms without offering much in terms of melody or songwriting.
There are some enjoyable moments, and the album is certainly lively, but I find the overall experience a little too predictable. Good fun in places, just not something I expect to return to very often.
