Loathe - A Stranger To You (2026)


I appreciate how much personality Loathe bring to this album. The combination of crushing heaviness, dreamy shoegaze textures and industrial electronics gives the record an identity that very few modern metal bands can claim. It never feels like they're simply following trends, and that artistic confidence makes the album consistently interesting to listen to.

Where it loses me is in the songwriting. The album is full of strong individual ideas, but it rarely develops them into moments with real emotional payoff. Instead of building tension and letting it unfold naturally, it often jumps toward another texture or another stylistic detour. The result is an album that constantly grabs my attention without always rewarding it.

The atmosphere remains impressive from beginning to end, but atmosphere alone isn't enough to carry a record. I keep waiting for the riffs, melodies and climaxes to leave a deeper mark, yet too many of them pass by without becoming memorable. The production doesn't help either, as the dense mix softens the impact of some genuinely good performances.

In the end, I hear a band with a remarkable artistic vision and a sound that feels unmistakably their own. I admire the willingness to experiment, but the execution doesn't consistently transform those ideas into songs with lasting emotional weight. The ambition is undeniable; the album simply doesn't convert enough of that ambition into compelling long-form songwriting.

I appreciate what this re-recording accomplishes because it finally gives these songs the sound they always deserved. The production is bigger, the performances are sharper, and the riffs hit with far more authority than they did on the original release. The youthful aggression is still there, but it's delivered with much greater precision. Where it loses me is in the writing itself. Most of the songs are built around the same formula of fast riffs, blast beats and breakdowns, and after a while they begin to blur together. The constant intensity creates excitement in the short term, but it also leaves very little room for tension, contrast or memorable climaxes. Instead of building toward defining moments, the album often feels like one long sustained assault. I also miss a stronger emotional dimension.
