I never feel like this is a bad album, but I rarely feel like it justifies its ambition either. The Rolling Stones still know how to write solid blues-based rock songs, and their chemistry remains intact, yet too much of the record settles into familiar habits instead of creating genuine excitement. It sounds comfortable, and that's both its greatest strength and its biggest limitation.
The performances carry a lot of the experience. Mick Jagger still commands attention with ease, and Keith Richards adds the kind of understated character that younger bands can't imitate. That authenticity keeps the album enjoyable even when the songwriting doesn't fully deliver. The problem is that the songs themselves rarely develop into memorable statements. They move along smoothly, but few of them gather enough momentum or emotional weight to leave a lasting impression.
I also find the production a little too refined. Everything is clean, balanced and easy to listen to, but that polish softens the rough edges that once made the band's music feel unpredictable. Instead of sounding dangerous, the album often sounds carefully managed, which reduces the impact of otherwise solid performances.
In the end, I hear a respectable late-career record from a legendary band rather than an essential addition to their catalogue. The craftsmanship is undeniable and the identity never disappears, but the album spends too much time revisiting familiar territory and not enough time creating moments that feel truly indispensable.
