Angelo De Augustine - Angel in Plainclothes (2026)


Angel in Plainclothes is delicate, intimate and meticulously arranged, but also frustratingly slight. Angelo De Augustine builds a soft-focus world of whispered vocals, chamber-folk textures and carefully placed acoustic details, yet the songs themselves rarely leave a strong enough imprint.

The best moments have real grace, especially “Pet Cemetery” and “Mirror Mirror,” but too much of the album sits in the same hushed emotional register. The production is beautiful, sometimes more beautiful than the material deserves, and the obvious Sufjan Stevens / Nick Drake lineage makes the lack of a truly distinctive identity more noticeable.

Pleasant, sincere and occasionally moving, but ultimately too restrained and melodically modest to justify the acclaim.

I appreciate what this re-recording accomplishes because it finally gives these songs the sound they always deserved. The production is bigger, the performances are sharper, and the riffs hit with far more authority than they did on the original release. The youthful aggression is still there, but it's delivered with much greater precision. Where it loses me is in the writing itself. Most of the songs are built around the same formula of fast riffs, blast beats and breakdowns, and after a while they begin to blur together. The constant intensity creates excitement in the short term, but it also leaves very little room for tension, contrast or memorable climaxes. Instead of building toward defining moments, the album often feels like one long sustained assault. I also miss a stronger emotional dimension.
