Green Carnation - A Dark Poem, Part III: The Messiah Complex (2026)
I think A Dark Poem, Part III: The Messiah Complex is a very good progressive metal album, but I don't think every section is equally memorable once the atmosphere and concept are stripped away.
The opening works well because Green Carnation immediately establish the darker, more dramatic tone without rushing into heaviness. I like the way the album lets tension build instead of trying to impress from the first minute.
The strongest parts for me are the sections where the band balance melancholy, melody and weight. When the guitars stay restrained and the vocals carry more of the emotion, the music feels much more personal than when it leans too heavily into familiar progressive-metal language.
There are some excellent transitions between quieter passages and heavier climaxes, and the keyboards add atmosphere without constantly competing with the guitars.
I also think the album benefits from taking its time. The longer structures generally feel justified because there is real movement inside them, not just instrumental extension for its own sake.
My main reservation is that some of the heavier passages are more effective than distinctive. The riffs are solid, the performances are excellent and the production gives everything plenty of weight, but a few sections feel like variations on ideas I have heard many times in progressive and gothic metal.
The concept is another strength, but also part of the limitation. I can follow the dramatic arc and appreciate how carefully the album is constructed, but sometimes I remember the atmosphere and narrative more clearly than the actual melodies.
The vocals are consistently strong and probably one of the main reasons the album stays emotionally convincing. There is enough restraint in the performance to stop the darker material from becoming theatrical for its own sake.
The final part is particularly effective because it gives the record a real sense of resolution instead of simply ending after another climax.
So for me this is clearly above the average progressive metal release. It has atmosphere, strong performances, good pacing and several genuinely memorable moments.
But I still think there is a difference between admiring how well the album is built and wanting to replay every section individually.

- Some heavier riffs and prog-metal passages feel too familiar
- The concept and atmosphere are occasionally more memorable than the melodies
- A few sections impress more as part of the full architecture than as individual songs
